A wood-paneled Italian cafe with a brass urn, marble bistro table, and a cup of thick hot chocolate beside biscotti.
Place
Lombardia's winters run cold and damp, with fog covering the Po Valley for months at a time. The Milanese tradition of thick cioccolata calda is a direct answer to that climate: a warming drink thick enough to eat with a spoon. The formula exists because of the weather.
Hot chocolate streaming from a stone mill into a glazed earthenware bowl in a sunlit workshop.
Process
Cocoa nibs are stone-ground to a paste; corn starch sets the thickness. Erythritol replaces sugar, leaving the same dark, spoonable consistency with zero grams of sugar per serving. No gums, no additives: four ingredients.
A man scooping cocoa powder from a linen sack into a tin canister on a marble counter.
People
We work with the family in Lombardia who makes the full hot chocolate line. The sugar-free formula uses erythritol as the only substitution from the original: the cocoa percentage and preparation are the same. Drink it the same way.

What's inside

Ingredients
Erythritol, cocoa powder (34%), corn starch, salt. No sugar. No artificial flavors. No gums.
Certifications
  • Made in Italy
  • Gluten-Free
  • Zero Additives
  • Sugar-Free
Contains
No major allergens declared. Gluten-free.

How to use it

Empty 1 sachet into 1/2 cup (120ml) of whole milk. Heat over medium, whisking, until thick and steaming, about 2 minutes. Pour into a teacup and eat with a spoon.

The erythritol doesn't change the texture. If you didn't know it was sugar-free, you wouldn't.

Questions

  • Does erythritol have an aftertaste?
Erythritol can have a slight cooling sensation, particularly in cold foods. In a hot drink it is minimal. Most people don't notice it. If you're sensitive to sweeteners, try half a sachet first.
  • Is this safe for diabetics?
Erythritol has a glycemic index of zero and does not raise blood sugar. We can't give medical advice, but it is widely used in diabetes-friendly products.
  • How is it different from the regular dark version?
The only change is the sweetener: erythritol replaces sugar at the same proportion. The cocoa percentage (34%) and preparation are identical. The texture and thickness are the same.
  • Why is it so thick?
Same reason as all our cioccolata calda: corn starch sets the texture when heated. Thick is the point.
  • Can I adjust the thickness?
Yes. More heat equals thicker, under 90 seconds equals drinkable. Half a cup of milk per sachet is the starting ratio.
  • Is it dairy-free?
Yes. No milk or dairy ingredients. Add whole milk to prepare.
  • How long does it keep?
Sealed sachets: cool, dry place, 12 or more months. Prepared: refrigerate and drink within 2-3 days.
  • How is this shipped?
From our New York warehouse via Amazon fulfillment. In-stock orders ship in 1-2 business days. Free shipping over $75.
  • What if it arrives damaged or I don't love it?
Write to us. We refund within 60 days, no questions.

Couldnt finish it

I wanted a darker cocoa without sugar. This tasted bitter and oddly chalky to me, even after extra whisking. poured out half the mug

Texture takes some work

Flavor is decent and I like that it isnt extremely sweet, but mine clumped even with a whisk. The second cup came out better after I warmed the milk more slowly. Still not as thick as I expected from the photos. Its okay, just fussier than hot chocolate should be tbh

Couldnt get past the aftertaste

wanted to like this but the sweetener aftertaste hangs around forever. Thickened fine, smelled good, then every sip had that same sharp finish. My husband left his cup half full. too expensive for both of us to dump it out. wont reorder

Not for me

Didnt love this one. Texture got thick, which was nice, but the sweetener aftertaste hung around. My husband finished his cup. I dumped mine. 2 stars

For when you want chocolate not candy

Hot chocolate that actually tastes like chocolate rather than chocolate-flavored sugar water. I know thats a low bar but most products fail it. This one doesnt.

Compared it to the regular version

Bought both the sugar-free dark and the regular version to compare. Gave the regular to my kids. Kept the sugar-free dark for myself. The dark chocolate flavor here is actually more intense without the sugar. Surprised by that.

Pretty good but a bit bitter for me

The dark chocolate flavor is genuine but it leans bitter in a way that didnt work for me without any sweetener at all. Maybe adding a touch of honey would fix it. Good quality otherwise.

Strong dark chocolate

STRONG dark chocolate. If you want sweet this is not for you. If you want real dark cacao this is exactly for you.

Better than I expected

I ordered this mostly for my partner who avoids sugar. Ended up drinking half of it myself. I prefer the sweetened version personally but this one has a depth of flavor that the regular version doesnt quite match.

My evening ritual

Before bed, small cup, dark and bitter, helps me wind down. Six months in, this is a thing I look forward to.

Not what I wanted

I wanted sweet hot chocolate and grabbed the wrong one. My fault. But even knowing what it is, its more bitter than I enjoy. Other people who like dark chocolate and no sweetness will probably love it. Im just not that person.

Outstanding for the category

I'll be clear: the 'sugar-free hot chocolate' category has a very low bar. This clears it by a mile. The cacao flavor is genuine. The texture is real. No artificial sweetener taste. Outstanding for the category and honestly just outstanding.

Compares to what I had in Italy

Had something like this at a small bar in Lombardia years ago, very dark, not sweet, almost dessert-like. This comes close. Close enough that it's now in my cabinet.

Winter drink sorted

I've been looking for a winter evening ritual that doesn't involve alcohol or a ton of sugar. This is it. Dark, serious, not sweet, thick. Done.

Tin arrived open

Lid wasnt sealed when I opened the box. Powder was all over the inside of the shipping box. About half was salvageable. Flavor on what I was able to use seemed fine but I lost half the tin.

Sends a real message as a gift

Gave this to a colleague who mentioned being on a low-sugar diet. She came to my desk the next day to talk about it. Not what I expected from a gift but I'll take it.

Works with any milk

tried it with whole milk, oat milk, almond milk. all three work. oat milk made it the thickest. almond milk made it thinner but the chocolate came through more. now I have opinions about sugar-free hot chocolate which is not something i expected to happen

Deep chocolate no sweetness

DEEP chocolate. NO sweetness. This is exactly the spec I was looking for.

Converted my skeptic husband

My husband tasted the sugar-free version before he knew it was sugar-free. He said it was the best hot chocolate I'd made. Then I told him. He was irritated in the best way possible.

Fine but not for me

fine. not bad. just not exciting. maybe i expected more from all the reviews. its sugar-free dark hot chocolate. it tastes like that. no complaints really just no enthusiasm either

The thickness sells it

The thickness is what does it. Most sugar-free hot chocolate is thin and sad. This is genuinely thick when you whisk it properly. Made it in a small pan on the stove with whole milk and it was as good as something I'd pay for at a cafe.

Surpisingly good for sugar-free

Surpisingly good for sugar free. And I mean that sincerely bc ive tried others and they were not surprisingy good, they were just present and warm.

Gift for a coffee-obsessed friend

My friend keeps her sugar intake low and has been lamenting the lack of good hot chocolate options for years. Sent her this. She messaged me 'ok this is the one' the day it arrived. Easy gift.

Very good for the category

Very good for a sugar-free option. Better than anything else Ive tried in this lane. Not quite as satisfying to me as sweetened hot chocolate but thats a me problem.

Better than the cafes I've tried

I've ordered dark hot chocolate at probably half a dozen specialty coffee shops in my city looking for something this rich and dark. None of them came close. Made this at home with oat milk (experimenting) and it still worked.

Like drinking a good dark chocolate bar

The flavor profile here is genuinely close to drinking a melted dark chocolate bar, which is exactly what good hot chocolate should be. The absence of sugar makes the chocolate come through even more clearly. This is the version I'll keep buying.

Six Italian regions. Nothing reformulated. Imported direct.
