A wood-paneled Italian cafe with a brass urn, marble bistro table, and a cup of thick hot chocolate beside biscotti.
Place
Lombardia runs from the Alps to the Po Valley. Milan, at its center, developed one of Italy's oldest hot chocolate traditions through its historic cafes: thick, dark, served warm in a small cup, eaten more than drunk. The cold continental winters made it a staple.
Hot chocolate streaming from a stone mill into a glazed earthenware bowl in a sunlit workshop.
Process
Cocoa powder (25%), sugar, corn starch, salt. The formula is the definition of cioccolata calda: starch creates the thickness when heated with milk, cocoa provides the intensity. Nothing more is needed: no gums, no artificial additives.

People
We work with the family in Lombardia who has made this formula for the Italian market for years. It is the version we built the line around. We taste each batch before it ships.

Questions

  • Why is it so thick?
That is the cioccolata calda tradition. The corn starch sets the texture when heated. You eat it more than drink it. Serve in a small cup, use a spoon.
  • What makes it different from American hot chocolate?
American hot chocolate is typically a thin, sweet drink. Cioccolata calda is thick enough to eat with a spoon and less sweet: the cocoa is the feature, not the sugar.
  • Can I adjust the thickness?
Yes. More time on the heat equals thicker. Under 90 seconds equals drinkable. Start with half a cup of milk per sachet.
  • Is it dairy-free?
Yes. No milk or dairy ingredients in the classic. The milk is what you add to prepare it.
  • Is it made from cocoa powder or melted chocolate?
Cocoa powder (25%), corn starch, sugar, salt. The thickness comes from the starch, not from melted chocolate.
  • How long does it keep?
Sealed sachets: cool, dry place, 12 or more months. Prepared: refrigerate and drink within 2-3 days.
  • Is the mix complete?
Yes. Just add milk and heat.
  • How is this shipped?
From our New York warehouse via Amazon fulfillment. In-stock orders ship in 1-2 business days. Free shipping over $75.
  • What if it arrives damaged or I don't love it?
Write to us. We refund within 60 days, no questions.

Wouldnt buy again

I followed the directions and whisked it well, but mine stayed lumpy and the sweetness completely took over. Tried a second cup with less powder and it just tasted thin. My kids didnt finish theirs either. For something this expensive I expected a rich cafe-style drink, not a fight with little clumps at the bottom. Maybe I got a weird bag but I wont reorder

Dessert in a mug

I followed the stovetop directions and whisked longer than I normally would. Worth it. This gets properly thick and rich, more like a drinkable dessert than regular cocoa. My daughter took one sip and said 'why doesnt ours always taste like this?' We topped it with a little whipped cream and split a second cup. Definitely a cold-night treat, not an everyday packet. The only problem is waiting for it to cool when it smells that good!!

A rainy night ritual now

The first time I made this I treated it like regular cocoa and rushed it. That was my mistake. The second time I warmed the milk slowly, whisked the powder in a little at a time, and let it thicken for another minute. Completely different cup. It came out rich enough to feel like dessert, with a smooth texture and none of the watery finish I get from packets. My husband took one sip and said 'wait, did you make this from scratch?' I did not correct the record immediately. We split one mug after dinner because a full serving is seriously substantial. The flavor is deep but not bitter, and it doesnt need marshmallows or extra sugar to make it interesting. I like it best in a small cup with a pinch of cinnamon on top. The bag reseals well, although some powder gathers in the fold and gets on the counter every single time... probably a me problem. We have now made it during two thunderstorms and one regular Tuesday, so apparently it has become a household ceremony. If you want thin drinkable cocoa, this probably isnt it. If you want something you can sip slowly with a spoon nearby, YES

Dessert in a mug

The directions looked almost too simple, but whisking it slowly made a BIG difference. Mine turned thick and smooth in a small saucepan, closer to a drinkable pudding than the watery packets I grew up with. My son took one sip and said 'this is the fancy kind' which is accurate 😂 We split the batch between two small cups because it is rich. On the second try I added a little extra milk and that was my preferred balance. No clumps, no scorched taste, and the chocolate flavor lasted instead of disappearing into sweetness. This will be in the cabinet when cold weather hits

Dessert in a mug

This is much thicker than the powdered packets I grew up with, in a very good way. I whisked it slowly on the stove and poured it into two small cups because a regular mug would have been a LOT. My daughter added marshmallows; I left mine alone and drank it like dessert. Rich chocolate taste without that dusty finish some mixes have. Next time im making it after dinner instead of right before bed because neither of us needed that much excitement at 10 pm lol

Thick and cozy

Made this on a rainy night and it was closer to a dessert than regular cocoa. I used a small whisk and warmed it slowly, which gave it a really smooth texture. My husband added a little milk because it was too rich for him, while I liked it exactly as prepared. One package made two smaller cups for us. Not an everyday drink at this price, but definately something I would keep around for winter weekends or when friends come over. ☕

Dessert in a mug

This is not the thin cocoa I grew up drinking. It turns thick and glossy with a little patience at the stove, more like a proper dessert than a drink from a packet. I made two small cups after dinner and my husband said 'wait, are we supposed to eat this with a spoon?' We almost did. Rich enough that a small serving feels right, and it wasnt harsh or powdery. Next time I may add a pinch of salt, but honestly it needs nothing. A cold-night keeper!!!

Winter dessert cup

This is not the watery cocoa I grew up with. It turns glossy and thick if you give it a minute on the stove, and one small mug feels like dessert. I made it after sledding with the kids and everyone went quiet for once.

Better than the cafe version

Gave this as a gift for the holidays and the recipient texted me the same day she tried it. That almost never happens with food gifts. Ended up ordering one for myself too. It's genuinely good in a way that's hard to explain without trying it.

Closest to Italy I've found at home

I was skeptical bc I've tried a bunch of fancy hot chocolates and most of them taste like a regular powder with better marketing. This one is different. It's thick in the way that stuff I had at a cafe in Siena was thick, almost a drinking chocolate situation. My kids (8 and 11) now refuse the grocery store version. Third tin this season.

A new ritual

ok so I bought this bc someone in my book club mentioned it and I'm not usually a hot chocolate person. I'm converting. It's thick without being cloying, has actual depth of flavor, doesn't taste like sugar water with brown coloring. Already reordered.

Best hot chocolate I've found

I grew up drinking Swiss Miss and thought hot chocolate was hot chocolate. Then my neighbor brought over a tin of this and made it properly on the stovetop and I just stood there in her kitchen for a minute. It is categorically different from what I had been drinking. Rich, thick, actual chocolate taste that lingers. Not a sugar bomb. Went home and ordered two tins that evening. My kids now ask for it specifically by name. We do it on Friday nights as a treat, all four of us around the kitchen table. It's become a thing. I didn't expect a hot chocolate to become a household ritual but here we are. On my fourth tin now and genuinely considering buying a case.

Worth trying

Pretty great. My daughter drinks it and calls it 'the fancy one.' I'll take that. Wish the tin were bigger.

Great quality, small portion

Good hot chocolate, genuinely better than anything in a grocery store. Four stars bc Im being honest about the price-to-quantity ratio, not bc of quality.

Love it, minor quibbles

Good quality, genuinely. My kids love it. I give four stars bc I found the sweetness level a bit high for me personally, but everyone else in the house disagrees so take that for what its worth.

wow

Whisked it on the stovetop with whole milk. WOW. Nothing like the Swiss Miss situation.

A household staple now

We make this on Sunday mornings. It has become a whole ritual, which I did not anticipate when I ordered a single tin. Warm the milk slowly, whisk it in, dont rush it. The payoff is real. Already on my second tin and I ordered a third as a stocking stuffer.

Solid, just watch the price per serving

Love this. My one note is I wish it were a bit less sweet for my taste, but I know thats personal preference. The quality is clearly there.

Decent but not the hype

Made it after a ski day. Thick, rich, exactly what I needed. Already ordered more.

Six Italian regions. Nothing reformulated. Imported direct.
